What is a Bolinder engine?
Bolinder was a Swedish manufacturer whose oil and diesel engines became well known internationally. On British inland waterways, Bolinder marine diesels powered many narrowboats, barges, and working craft. They remain a living part of canal heritage for owners and restorers.
Why does the casting say Bolinders (plural)?
It is not a spelling error — it is the company name.
The firm was founded by brothers Jean and Carl Gerhard Bolinder (about 1844–45, Stockholm). The formal name was J. & C. G. Bolinders Mekaniska Verkstad; in Swedish and trade use it was often shortened to Bolinders. English speakers usually say “a Bolinder engine” for one machine, while the maker’s mark cast on the iron is often Bolinders (the firm). The same kind of distinction appears with other makers: people say “a Rolls” or “a Lister”, but the badge may still read the full house name.
After 1932 the motor side merged with Munktells as Bolinder-Munktell (BM), later associated with Volvo BM. Older marine castings commonly still carry the pre-merge Bolinders house name. In short: Bolinder is everyday talk for the engine type; Bolinders is who cast it. More company background is on the History page.
Why do people associate Bolinders with UK canals?
Slow-speed marine diesels suit canal and river work. Bolinders earned a reputation for sturdy propulsion rather than high revs, so period craft and later conversions often carried them. That is why manuals, parts lists, and owner tips still circulate in the waterways community.
What are the 1051 and 1052?
In enthusiast material, the 1051 is commonly discussed as a single-cylinder four-stroke marine diesel, with the 1052 as a twin-cylinder relative in the same general family. They appear often in UK canal contexts and in parts/instruction documentation. See the Models page for a compact comparison.
What about the 1053 and 1054?
The 1053 and 1054 are covered together in a classic workshop manual set used by enthusiasts. Type and serial plates on the engine (and gearbox plates where fitted) should be quoted for service and parts discussions. The 1053/1054 workshop manual is a PDF on the Manuals page.
What is a Bolinder semi-diesel or hot-bulb engine?
Earlier Bolinder tradition includes two-stroke hot-bulb / semi-diesel engines (types such as E, M, NE and BM from the early twentieth century). A lamp or starter heats the bulb; many marine types reverse by de-clutching. They are a different lineage from the later four-stroke 105x series — see the expanded History page and the short ignition walk-through below. Do not mix manuals between the two families.
How does a hot-bulb Bolinder work (short version)?
A classic hot-bulb Bolinder is not a modern high-compression diesel. Compression is relatively low (often described around 3:1 to 5:1). Ignition needs a red-hot metal chamber — the bulb.
- Before start: a blow-lamp (or similar heat source) brings the bulb up to temperature.
- Fuel: is sprayed into that hot space so it can vaporise.
- Compression stroke: the rising piston pushes air into the bulb; the mixture ignites on the hot surface (with some help from compression heat).
- Power stroke: combustion drives the piston; once running, residual heat keeps the bulb hot enough that the lamp can be put out.
Many marine Bolinders of this line are two-stroke, often with hit-and-miss governing (the off-beat idle many people hear), and some are direct-reverse — no modern gearbox; reverse is obtained by stopping and restarting the engine in the opposite direction. What does a Bolinder sound like?

Does this site sell engines or spare parts?
No. This is an educational heritage site. For parts or engines, use specialist suppliers and verify authenticity yourself. Historical “for sale” pages from old sites should not be treated as current stock.
Where are the PDF manuals?

My 1050-series Bolinder smokes — what did older tips say?
An enthusiast tip preserved from the old FAQ (attributed there to John Pattle) notes that injectors on some 1050-series engines sit in copper sleeves and should not be fitted with copper sealing washers: an extra washer can lift the nozzle and upset spray into the combustion space, encouraging poor burning, knock, smoke, and waste. Treat this as historic community advice, not a certified repair procedure — confirm against original manuals and a qualified engineer before work.
What is a cutter (exhaust tip) under bridges?
Traditional canal tips include managing chimney exhausts before tunnels and bridges. A cutter is a small pipe arrangement used to break the force of exhaust under low structures. Details vary by boat; local practice and safety come first.
